Portland Head Light House Cape Elizabeth Maine. Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, near the city of Portland. It was commissioned by George Washington in 1787 and has been in operation ever since, making it one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States.
The lighthouse stands at 80 feet tall and is made of local granite. It features a distinctive tower with a red roof and a white cylindrical structure, topped by a Fresnel lens that was once powered by oil lamps and later electricity. The light from Portland Head Light can be seen from up to 24 miles away and serves as a navigational aid for ships entering the busy Portland Harbor.
The lighthouse and its surrounding grounds are open to the public, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the historic site, take guided tours, and learn about the history of the lighthouse and its importance to the region.
