Description
Big Boy #4014 Steam Locomotive. Big Boy #4014 is a historic steam locomotive originally built for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1941. It was one of 25 Big Boy locomotives constructed by the American Locomotive Company for the Union Pacific, and it is the only one still in operation today.
The Big Boy #4014 is a massive locomotive, measuring 132 feet long and weighing over 1.2 million pounds. It has a 4-8-8-4 wheel configuration, which means it has four leading wheels, eight driving wheels, another set of eight driving wheels, and four trailing wheels. The locomotive was designed to haul heavy freight trains over the steep grades of the Rocky Mountains and was capable of pulling a train of up to 100 freight cars.
In 2019, the Union Pacific restored the Big Boy #4014 to operation as part of their heritage fleet. It is now used for special excursions and public displays, drawing crowds wherever it goes. Its striking black and red paint scheme, massive size, and the sound of its steam whistle and chugging engine make it a memorable sight for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
